HARIPUR: The players of University of Haripur outsmarted the teams of other colleges of the district by winning the top positions in the inter-collegiate championship.

According to UoH Sports Director Dr Syed Ziaul Islam, the players of UoH and its six affiliated colleges participated in the 8th inter-collegiate sports championship.

The affiliated colleges of the university include Government Postgraduate College for Boys Haripur, Government Degree College Khanpur, Government Degree College Ghazi, Government College of Management Sciences Haripur, Government Degree College Khalabat Township and Wapda College Tarbela.

The players exhibited their skills in 13 different games including football, volleyball, basketball, handball, hockey, table tennis, long tennis, kabadi, tug-of-war and badminton.

The players of UoH secured 71 points in all the 13 games while Government Postgraduate College for Boys stood second with 64 points and Government Degree College Khalabat clinched third position with 40 points.

Vice-chancellor Prof Shafiqur Rehman gave away trophies and shields to the winning teams and the best players of the championship.

Meanwhile, a three-day sports gala concluded in Haripur jail on Sunday.

The prisoners took part in matches of cricket, table tennis, carrom board, sack race, volleyball, musical chair and race. The event was organised by jail administration in collaboration with district sports office.

JEWELLERS: The local jewellers have demanded of the authorities to control street crimes and resolve traffic problems in the main bazaar.

Khan Zeb, president of Sarafa and Jewellers Association Haripur, told a press conference here on Sunday poor security in the city resulted in street crimes. He said that they would take up the issue with administration before giving a final call for strike.

He said that local jewellers felt insecure owing to the growing street crimes in the city. “Jewellers feel vulnerable to untoward incidents that could happen anytime,” he added.

Mr Zeb said that poor traffic management left the main bazaar a mere parking lot and police were unable to resolve the problem owing to which movement of customers was difficult.

He expressed the hope that the district administration would listen to them and address their problems.
