20 prisoners given educational exemptions

RAWALPINDI: The regional committee for educational pardon of prisoners granted educational exemptions to 20 prisoners awaiting trial in the jails of the Rawalpindi region.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the Regional Committee for Educational Pardon of Prisoners held on Thursday under the chairmanship of Deputy Inspector General of Prisons Rawalpindi region Saeedullah Gondal.

Inspector General of Prisons Punjab Malik Mubashir Ahmed Khan has handed over the powers of issuing educational exemption for the welfare of prisoners to the DIGs at the regional level.

The meeting was attended by superintendents, deputy superintendents and assistant superintendents from jails of the region.

During the meeting, the cases of educational exemptions of 21 prisoners were reviewed.

After examination of the records, eight prisoners having qualifications of Nazra Quran, five with Shiqetal Quran, four matriculation, one Al-Lsan Al-Arabi and one MA were approved. However, it was decided to re-examine the case of one prisoner.

Mr Gondal directed the superintendents to improve the academic performance of the prisoners in their jails and address the problems.

In addition, it was recommended to pay special attention to the religious and worldly education of the prisoners.

Earlier, Superintendent Adiala Jail Ijaz Asghar was transferred while Asad Warraich replaced him on Tuesday.

A notification in this regard was also been issued by the Home Department.

The new superintendent of the jail will assume his charge on Wednesday. Mr Asghar has been posted as the superintendent of the district jail Faisalabad.
