‘Goat debate settled’: Football experts hail Argentina’s Messi as greatest ever after World Cup win

Argentina won the World Cup on Sunday after beating defending champions France 4-2 on penalties, following a dramatic 3-3 draw after extra time.

Lionel Messi was the leading goal-taker for the Argentinian side and cemented his position as the G.O.A.T. (greatest of all time) after his match-winning performance.

FIFA cheekily asked the question about who was the G.O.A.T. which had Twitter users thronging the replies with pictures of the Argentinian great.

It later followed up with a picture of Messi with a crown.

“A game we’ll never forget,” FIFA said and most people agreed.

The PML-N also showed which camp they stood in.

Islamabad United’s team strategy manager Hassan Cheema said the World Cup was needed to cement Messi’s greatness.

English former field hockey player Sam Quek said the debate was now settled on who was the greatest football player between Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

“Messi truly is the G.O.A.T,” said PPP leader Aseefa Bhutto Zardari.

Others had high words of praise for France’s Kylian Mbappe. “I will never forget how Mbappe changed the game in a few minutes single-handedly. Although he lost, but, this performance will be remembered forever,” said Geo News staff member Khurram Siddiqui.

Meanwhile, President Dr Arif Alvi said it was an “outstanding World Cup” and also praised Mbappe, saying his “hat-trick was a treat to watch”.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif noted the “nail-biting” finish of the match.

Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari also congratulated the Argentinian winners on behalf of the people of Lyari.

Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi said it was a “fairytale ending” for Messi while Mbappe was “a legend in the making”.
