ENTRANCE TEST WOES

ENTRANCE TEST WOES: The Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC) last month held the Medical and Dental College Admission Test (MDCAT), which left a lot to be desired. Through social media platforms, the PMC said there would be rechecking and grace marks would be given, but then deleted the notice from its website and other platforms. After the rechecking, however, the marks were actually deducted. The PMC then decided to count the elective marks of repeaters and full marks of fresh candidates, giving undue advantage to the repeaters, leaving others only wonder.

WATER SHORTAGE: Since 2011, residents in most Karachi areas have been forced to buy water through tankers, with a single tanker costing anywhere between Rs2,000 and Rs4,000. Many have failed to understand over the years why there is enough water at the hydrants to fill the tankers, and no water to be supplied directly to taxpayers. The city’s lower middle class cannot afford clean water and are compelled to use whatever water is available to them. The Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) needs to show some mercy.

LOAN ENTRAPMENT: Many white-collar families have to seek assistance from online loan providers who ask for personal information and demand access to sensitive personal data in order to get loans. The authorities concerned must clarify if this sharing of data is safe.

WHEAT CRISIS: Pakistan is said to be an agricultural economy as it produces rice, wheat and other staple food grains aplenty. But Khuzdar, the third largest district of Balochistan with an increasing population, has been encountering a severe shortage of wheat in recent times. The residents are left in the lurch and their visits to the market in search of wheat flour are going down the drain, resulting in hunger and misery. The government in Balochistan needs to ensure a smooth wheat supply.
