Minimum wage rule to be enforced, SHC told
KARACHI: A provincial law officer has informed the Sindh High Court that the minimum wage of workers will be made applicable across the province.
An assistant advocate general of Sindh further submitted that the Sindh government through a notification issued on July 7, 2022 had fixed Rs25,000 as minimum wage of workers in all industrial/commercial establishments in the province.
The AAG made these submissions during the hearing of a petition seeking minimum wage and safety measures for sanitation workers.
The lawyer for the petitioners informed the two-judge bench headed by Justice Mohammad Iqbal Kalhoro that she was satisfied to the extent of minimum wage. However, she submitted that the petition also involved issue of safe and secure working conditions for sanitation workers in the departments concerned and sought time to prepare recommendations for making improvements in this regard.
Subsequently, the bench adjourned the matter till Feb 8.
The petitioners stated that janitors working on daily wages or through third party contractors were cruelly exploited by wages much below the legal minimum wage.
