From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1973: Fifty Years Ago: ‘Anti-national elements’

KARACHI: Mir Rasul Bakhsh Talpur, Governor of Sind, yesterday [Feb 3] urged the people to frustrate the designs of anti-national elements who were trying to create disunity among the people. He was speaking at the first anniversary of the All-Pakistan Women Rifle Corps passing out parade at Sir Syed Girls College. Referring to the slogans of regionalism and identification of people on linguistic basis, the Governor said some anti-national elements were trying to create prejudice among the people to damage national solidarity.

He said the only way to ensure unity ... was to adopt the attitude of brotherhood regardless of language or race. The Governor congratulated the girls for their devotion and determination to share the responsibility for the defence of the country with men. He exhorted the people to become true Muslims and advocated simplicity... . He said Khaki dress should not be a ceremonial dress alone but people should wear it daily. — Staff Reporter

[Meanwhile, as reported by news agencies from Washington,] Prime Minister Edward Heath of Britain warned … that unilateral US troop withdrawal from Europe might give the Soviets the green light to extend their influence over the western part of the continent.
