4 die in Sahiwal as chill continues
SAHIWAL, Jan 8: Four people fell victim to cold wave in Sahiwal during the last 24 hours. They were identified as Shabbir Ahmed, 70, a resident of Chak 174/9-L; Karam Bibi, 40 of Chak 94/6-R; Anwar Bibi, 60 of Chak 67/4-R and Gulistan Shereen, 13 of Chak 115/12-L. They died of pneumonia.
In Lahore, bright sunshine on Sunday warmed up Lahorites to some extent who braved a record -2 degrees C for well over two days.
The city had also experienced the same minimum temperature on Friday night after 71 years. It had recorded -2 degrees temperature in 1935, according to the local Met office.
People basked in the sun amid chilly winds. The day’s minimum temperature increased from Saturday’s 17.2 degrees to 20 degrees but it again started dropping after the sunset.
Chief Meteorologist Shaukat Awan said the sunny day arrested further decline in the temperature and weather conditions would start improving in a day or two.
The Met office has forecast that it will remain cold and dry with mist in the morning during the next 24 hours.
APP ADDS: The prevailing cold wave sent scores of people, majority of them older and infants, to various hospitals in the Punjab capital and other parts of the province where mercury dipped below-freezing temperature during last two days, health authorities said.
“We have adequate medicines and every necessary arrangements to cope with ongoing cold-wave in the province”, Health Minister Tahir Ali Javed said here on Sunday.
Health experts advised people in general and older people in particular to adopt precautionary measures to prevent themselves from cold and keep themselves warm for avoiding chest-infection and respiratory problem.
In the rest of the country, mainly dry and cold weather along with partial cloudy atmosphere is expected in most parts of the country. The cold spell in hilly areas will continue during the next 24 hours.
QUETTA: Regional Met Office has forecast partly cloudy weather for Quetta valley and its surroundings for the next 24 hours.
Maximum temperature on Sunday was recorded here at 13.0 degree while minimum at -12.5 degree. Humidity remained 10 per cent.
On Monday, maximum temperature is expected to remain between 13 to 15 degree while minimum between -7 to -9 degrees.
Highest maximum temperature was recorded in Balochistan as 27.0 degree at Lasbella and the lowest minimum temperature as -12.0 degree at Quetta.
Weather will remain mainly dry in Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Faisalabad, Sargodha, D. G. Khan, Multan and Bahawalpur divisions during next 24 hours, the forecast said.
KARACHI: Cold and dry weather has been forecast for the city over next 24 hours. According to Meteorological department on Sunday, the minimum temperature will remain between 6 and 8 degrees. During last 24 hours, the minimum temperature recorded was 7 degrees Celsius while maximum was 23.6. Humidity was 11 per cent.
