THATTA, Jan 14: Four persons, including an ASI and a police constable, were injured on Friday night as the Gharo police resorted to indiscriminate firing while confronting with violent protesters on the National Highway in the Gujjo town around 12 kilometres away from here.

Hundreds of residents of the Gujjo town were protesting against alleged confinement and torture of one Khamiso Mirbahar, brother of a local PPP leader, Urs Mirbahar, by the Gujjo police.

The protesters staged a sit-in and burnt tyres on the highway, resulting in suspension of traffic for two hours.

Gharo SHO Yaqoob Bhatti failed to reconcile with the protesters.

Later, the police opened fire to disperse the protesters and as a result two persons, Zulfiqar Shaikh and Imamuddin, were injured.

The protesters pelted stones and attacked the police with clubs resulting in injuries to ASI Badar Soomro and a constable.

DSP headquarters Ghulam Nabi Keerio rushed to the site and held negotiations with the protesters.

On assurance of the DSP that action would be taken against the SHO and other police officials concerned, the protesters dispersed.

POLICE RESTRAINED: The district and sessions judge of Thatta, Abdul Malik Gaddi, has warned the Makli police from raiding the religious court of Pir Ghulam Jilani in Makli.

He also asked police not to adopt atrocious attitude against disciples of the court.

Pir Mazharul Haq, a PPP leader and a counsel of Pir Ghulam Jilani, told newsmen in Makli on Saturday that Pir Rahmani, one of the sons of spiritual head of the Jilani school of thought and a leader of PPP, had complained that the police on instigation of an influential leader had raided their spiritual courts and arrested some disciples.

ASI Imam Bux Jokhio who appeared on behalf of the Makli police was warned not to conduct such raids in future.

The judge advised Pir Jilani to lodge a direct complaint in the court if the police violated the court’s directives.

Pir Mazhar said that political rivals of the PPP in Thatta had crossed all limits of ethics.

PROCESSION: Growers in coordination with social welfare organizations took out a procession here on Saturday in the coastal town of Jati against shortage of irrigation water and zoning system about procurement of sugar cane by sugar mills.

The procession started from the Landa wah and finished at the Fazil chowk.
