Illegal construction

THE illegal construction of buildings and apartments in Karachi has been a long-standing issue which continues to grow with each passing day. It has several negative consequences. Many of these illegal buildings are constructed without proper planning, using substandard materials, and without following the necessary building codes and regulations. As a result, they are structurally weak, and pose a risk to the people living or working in them.

The impact of illegal construction is not only limited to its structure. It also has a negative impact on the environ-ment as these buildings are usually built on encroached public spaces and green areas. This naturally takes away the beauty of the city.

Furthermore, illegal construction also leads to the exploitation of labourers who work on these sites. These workers are often forced to work in unsafe conditions and are not paid fairly for their work.

The government must take strict action to stop illegal construction in Karachi. It should implement strict laws and regulations to ensure that builders follow proper guidelines and obtain the necessary approvals before beginning construction. In addition, the govern-ment must also conduct regular inspections to identify and demolish illegal buildings.

The public can also prevent illegal construction by reporting such activities to the relevant authorities and doing necessary research before investing in any project. By doing so, they can ensure that their neighbourhoods and communities are safe and secure.

The relevant authorities should take appropriate and prompt action, and ensure that the city grows and expands in a sustainable as well as safe manner.
