HYDERABAD: Network of lined channels planned

HYDERABAD, Jan 17: Tando Allahyar District Nazim Dr Rahila Magsi has said that the government is determined to lay a network of lined watercourses to check wastage of water and bring more land under cultivation.

She was speaking at a cheque distribution ceremony at the district nazim secretariat on Tuesday.

She called upon farmers to cooperate with the district government in the lining of watercourses.

She said the government had allocated huge funds for the lining of watercourses and it was now up to growers to take full advantage of the project.

She said that the lining would not only conserve water but would also go a long way in boosting crop production.

She distributed cheques for Rs1.7 million (40 per cent of the cost) for lining watercourses among landlords.

DCO Farooq Leghari, DDO agriculture Shahid Gaho, DO Shakeel Shaikh and EDO agriculture Lal Din were also present on the occasion.

ARRESTED: Police on Tuesday arrested six bandits with the help of people.

Six armed men entered house of Shahmir Qaimkhani to commit dacoity.

The people of the locality besieged the house.

Tando Allahyar DPO Zakir Hussain Shah told a news conference that the bandits were arrested after an encounter and with the help of the people of the locality.

He identified them as Maqsood Shah, Alam Bengali, Imran Bengali, Javed Bengali, Amir Hussain Bengali and Imtiaz Bengali.

All bandits belonged to Karachi except Maqsood Ali.

The DPO said a large quantity of arms and ammunition was also recovered from them.

SYMPOSIUM: The Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences will hold a five-day 4th annual symposium on cancer on January 19.

More than 1,500 specialists of various diseases, doctors and scholars will attend the symposium, workshop and lectures.

The chairman of the symposium committee, Dr Shahzad Leghari and Prof Sattar Memon told reporters that a pre-symposium public awareness programme will be held on January 19.

ACADEMIC YEAR: The vice-chancellor will address all students of the university on January, 24 in connection with beginning of new academic session of 2006.

RESULT: The controller of examinations of Sindh University has announced result of bachelor of health and physical education special semester examination of 2004 here on Tuesday.
