MQM-P lodges protest with Odho over surge in crime

KARACHI: Perturbed at growing cases of street crime in the metropolis, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan on Tuesday questioned the performance of law enforcement agencies and asked police authorities to revisit their plan against the menace to ensure safety of life and property of the people.

A delegation of the MQM-P came up with strong reservations over the performance of police in a meeting with Karachi police chief Javed Alam Odho at his office.

Led by Khawja Izharul Hasan, the MQM-P delegation told the police chief that the police had only been found taking cosmetic measures instead of going after armed criminals.

The delegation said that 110 people had been killed and over 200 wounded in Karachi alone during 2022 only for resisting armed muggers.

“Whenever concerns over street crimes are raised, the police launched ineffective snap-checking, which never gives desired results but causes hardship to the common man,” said an MQM-P statement issued after the meeting.

It said that the delegation also discussed reasons behind an inordinate delay in launching the Karachi Safe City project and asked the police chief to revisit his plan against street crime to ensure safety of people.

Other members of the MQM-P delegation were MPAs Rana Ansar, Sanjay Perwani, Hashim Raza, Ghulam Jilani and Muhammad Abbas Jafri.
