Prisoners granted remission on Eid

KARACHI: Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on Thursday granted special remission of 120 days, or four months, to all convicted prisoners languishing in the prisons of Sindh on the occasion of Eidul Fitr.

The chief minister approved a summary floated by the provincial home department, granting special remission to all the convicted prisoners for 120 days.

The remission is for all convicted prisoners except condemned prisoners, those convicted of murder, espionage, subversion, anti-state activities, terrorism as well as those sentenced under the Foreigners Act, 1946.

Last year, the provincial government had granted an unprecedented six-month special remission (180 days) of sentence to convicted prisoners confined in various prisons of the province on the occasion of Eid.

Earlier this week, President Dr Arif Alvi had granted remission for 90 days in sentences of prisoners on the occasion of Eidul Fitr in exercise of Article 45 of the Constitution.

The presidential relief will be applicable to male and female prisoners above 65 and 60 years, respectively, who have completed their one-third sentence.
