DEATH OF A SCHOLAR

DEATH OF A SCHOLAR: A scholar, Dr Raj Wali Khan, was brutally shot dead in a market in Swabi while he was buying stuff for his family. He was killed in front of his young, innocent son who cried over his father’s body like a helpless soul. Society at large needs to contemplate what can be a cause enough to kill a scholar in such a fashion. The death of intellectuals and scholars is actually the death of institutions, academia, society, culture, knowledge and wisdom. The state and society should join hands to stop such killings.

ELECTRIC BUS ROUTES: The recent announcement by the Sindh government related to three new electric bus service routes covering prime locations of Karachi reflects well on the provincial government’s public transportation improvement strategy. The initiative will signifi- cantly improve the present public transport system in the city as the new routes will provide a reliable and economical transportation option to the citizens. The government has already taken measures to enhance public transportation system for which it deserves due recognition.

CLARIFICATION: This is with reference to the report ‘Pakistan Steel Mills earns Rs7.45bn in FY22’ (May 2). While presenting an overview of Pakistan Steel Mills’ financial statement, the report mentioned a decision of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC). As per Sui Southern Gas Company records, no such ECC decision exists.

REAL GHOSTS: Ghost teachers are more dangerous than the actual ghosts since they can destroy an entire nation. Balochistan, unfortunately, has many such teachers; almost 10,000 of them who are drawing salaries without rendering any service at all. The government would do well to remove all such teachers and replace them with honest and dedicated teachers to take this sacred cause further.
