From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1973: Fifty Years Ago: Fraternal welcome

TEHERAN: Teheran opened its arms today [May 10] to give an enthusiastic and fraternal welcome to President Bhutto and his party. They were welcomed at Mehrabad Airport by the Shah, Empress Farah, Premier Amir Abbas Hoveida, parliamentary leaders, ministers, security and service chiefs, gaily-dressed Pakistani girls and a large segment of the Pakistani community.

A squadron of Iranian Air Force jet fighters escorted the Presidential plane to Teheran from the border and a 21-gun salute heralded their arrival in Teheran. President Bhutto and members of his party belonging to the People’s Party wore party uniforms. Begum Bhutto wore a pale blue saree. The Shahanshah was resplendent in his military uniform. The Shahbanu was in a blue gown with a pink hat. — News agencies

Calcutta was rated the second dirtiest, followed by Manila, Lagos, Jakarta and Bangkok.
