Pakistani designer wins acclaim for creating royal dress
KARACHI: Pakistani fashion designer Mahpara Khan is making headlines for designing a dress, worn by Queen Maxima of the Netherlands, at the recently-held Jordanian royal wedding.
The queen visited Pakistan in 2019 and, according to the designer, saw some samples at the ‘Mahpara’ studio that caught her eye.
The same year, the queen’s stylists started to coordinate with Ms Khan’s team to create an outfit for the wedding of Prince Hussein and Saudi-born architect Rajwa Al Saif.
Ms Khan launched her brand ‘Mahpara’ in 2015 and has collaborated with major Pakistani fashion houses to create prints and designs.
The white floral gown, worn by Queen Maxima, was hand-crafted and an amalgam of Mughal patterns fused with traditional techniques. Ms Khan told Dawn Images it took 100 days with a team of 20 people working in shifts to complete the surface design.
She said she stayed in touch with the queen’s stylists for accurate measurements since she wasn’t physically present herself. “We had to go back and forth with her stylists for over 90 days to get fit and fall right,” she told Dawn Images.
