Tennis: Shafik shocks Inam Gul

KARACHI, Jan 26: Mohammad Shafik created the biggest upset when he stunned former Davis Cupper Inam Gul in the semifinal of men’s singles of the Sindh Open ranking tennis championship on Thursday at DHA Club.

Sahiwal-based Shafik was at his brilliant best in trouncing Inam 6-2, 7-5 in straight games to storm into the final.

Earlier, Rizwan Shamsi advanced to the semifinal of men’s single with a comprehensive 6-3, 6-4 victory against Danish Ahmed.

In the boy’s U-15 quarterfinals, Ghulam Abbas and Sunny Williams qualified for the semifinals after winning their matches.

The former outplayed Abdul Rehman 6-1, 6-1 while the later was stretched in overcoming Omer Shahid 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 in a two-hour long battle.

Adil Kohari and Mustafa Zaidi were the players to sail into the final of boys U-13 singles while Mateen Arif cruised into the semifinal of boy’s U-17.

Men’s singles: (semifinal): M Shafik bt Inam Gul 6-2, 7-5

Quarterfinal: Rizwan Shamsi bt Danish Ahmed 6-3, 6-4.

Boy’s U-15: (quarterfinals): Ghulam Abbas bt A Rehman 6-1, 6-1; Sunny Williams bt Omer Shahid 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.

Ladies singles: (quarterfinal): Anum Saeed bt Iman Malik 6-3 (retd).

Boys U-13: (semifinals): Adil Kohari bt Nameer Shamsi 7-5, 6-4; Mustafa Zaidi bt Hasan Azad 6-0, 6-2.

Boys U-17 (quarterfinal): Mateen Arif bt Hidayatullah 6-0, 6-4; Ghulam Abbas bt Hassan Ahmed 6-4, 6-3; Jahangir Rashid bt Ali Hassan Band-e-Ali 6-2, 1-6, 6-4.—PPI
