From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1948: Seventy-five years ago: Secret negotiations

There was no issue of Dawn today on account of Shab-i-Barat. The excerpt below has been taken from the previous day’s paper.

BANNU: Mohammad Yaqub Khan, MLA, Red Shirt Salar, who was recently arrested … for sedition, was believed to be the chief link between the Faqir of Ipi and Abdul Ghaffar Khan. Last year, he swore fealty to the Faqir before referendum … to harness his support against this province joining Pakistan. From that time on, he has often been visiting his spiritual preceptor, the Faqir of Ipi, and was believed to carry [on] some secret negotiations with him. He had been openly vilifying Pakistan and exhorted people to stand for Pathanistan.

[Meanwhile, as reported from Peshawar,] Dr Khan Saheb, Leader of the Frontier Assembly Red Shirt Party, told a correspondent his party men will not forsake “educating the Pathans in freedom and leading them towards the goal of real freedom for which they have so relentlessly fought British imperialism. [He said] “Whatever criticism we make is always in the direction of building the state not destroying it.”
