Saving heritage

SOME recent reports about the preservation of the historical Government Central Model School, Lahore, have suggested that there are plans to convert this iconic institution, which was established in 1883, into a part of the provincial government’s Daanish School project. The Punjab government memo No. SO (ER-1) 1-1/2023, dated April 19, is being quoted in this regard.

All parents, citizens of Lahore, anthropologists, art and culture historians, activists and even the public have serious concerns regarding this decision. The school, along with other such buildings, like Government College University, Punjab University, National College of Arts, Atchison College, General Post Office (GPO), Lahore High Court and Lahore Museum, are our national heritage and should not be allowed to be reformed or distorted in terms of their infrastructure or name.

The Central Model School, Lahore, holds immense historical significance as one of the oldest educational institutions in the city. Over the years, it has played a pivotal role in shaping the intellectual and academic landscape of Lahore, producing numerous eminent personalities who have contributed significantly to our society. The school’s majestic architecture, which represents the cultural and architectural heritage of the region, is a testament to its historical importance.

Efforts should be made to have the school declared a World Heritage by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) rather than being seized by the provincial government for a political project. The relevant authorities, like the Walled City of Lahore Authority, should document the historical aspects of the Central Model School before any renovations or demolitions take place.

This documentation should include detailed architectural surveys, photographs, historical records, and oral histories from alumni and staff. Furthermore, any restoration work required should be conducted by experts to ensure the preservation of the building’s original features and architectural integrity.

Protecting the Central Model School will not only be a testament to our commitment to saving cultural heritage, it will also serve as an inspiration to students and the community at large.

The matter should be reviewed with utmost consideration, and the relevant stakeholders, including educational experts, historians, and heritage conservationists should be involved in the process to explore alternative approaches that will ensure the preservation of this school.
