Notices issued on woman’s plea for protection in free-will marriage case

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court issued notices to the home secretary, inspector general of police (IGP) and other respondents on a petition filed by a woman seeking registration of a case against her father and other family members for extending threats as she contracted free-will marriage.

The petitioner, Sanam, approached the SHC and also sought protection for her husband and in-laws.

A two-judge bench headed by Justice Agha Faisal put the respondents and advocate general on notice for Aug 23 and restrained the police from lodging any FIR regarding abduction against the husband of petitioner.

It also directed the police officials concerned to provide complete protection to the couple and ensure that no harm was caused to them till next hearing.

The petitioner submitted that she has contracted marriage with Amjad Ali last week with her freewill and without any compulsion.

However, she contended that her father, brothers and other relatives were extending threats of dire consequences and also bent upon to involve her husband and his family members in false cases.

The petitioner further submitted that she and her husband were the residents of district Naushahro Feroze and moved to the provincial metropolis after the threats and sought directives for police to lodge FIR against her family members and other relatives.
