ELECTRICITY THEFT

ELECTRICITY THEFT: Cases of power theft are rampant across Sindh, including Allahabad, a small locality in Larkana, which seems to have fallen badly into the hands of such thieves. Can all this happen without some officials being hand in glove with the culprits. The kunda system has paralysed the lives of those who pay their bills regularly and have installed metered connections. Will the relevant authorities come to the rescue of the locals?

TAXING UNIFORMS: Once it used to be the price of prescribed books that used to worry the parents at the beginning of each academic year. Now they have to worry about the exorbitant prices of school uniforms as well. Outlets have started adding a 12 per cent general sales tax (GST) on each item used in uniform stitching. Is this fair? The taxation authorities should look into the matter rather urgently.

ROADS IN THAR: Recent rains have caused damage and destruction in the Thar region. The roads are in a dismal state as no repair work has been undertaken for the last several years. Besides, no new initiative has been taken for infrastructure development. Damaged roads are a threat to the locals. Many accidents have taken place in which people have sustained serious injuries. Thar needs urgent attention and empathy of the government and its various agencies.

TOURISM ETHICS: During my visit to Gilgit recently, I saw a lot of people throwing garbage all over the place, completely unmindful of what their action was doing to the otherwise beautiful, serene place. The nation’s concept of local tourism clearly needs to be revisited rather urgently. The tourists definitely need to show at least some basic level of civic sense.
