1,500 urea bags seized from truck

SAHIWAL: On a tip-off, the Agriculture Department seized 1,500 urea fertiliser bags from a truck on Sahiwal-Faisalabad Road.

Sources said these bags were loaded in Sadiqabad destined for a private warehouse, Sukhera Traders, in Sahiwal’s Noor Shah area.

Rana Maqsood, agriculture deputy director, told Dawn that a case was registered against Kareem Sukhera for profiteering, hoarding, and the illegal transportation of urea fertilizer.

The Noor Shah police registered a case on a complaint by Liaqat Ali under various sections of the Punjab Fertilizer (Control) Order of 1973 and the Punjab Essential Articles (Control) Act of 1973.

Driver Rasheed Ahmed gave a written statement that he picked up the fertilizer from Sadiqabad.

Local residents gathered near the truck and demanded that the urea be sold to them at official rates. Police and agriculture department officials negotiated with the people and said that the urea would be distributed to local growers once it is placed under their “superdari”.

The Noor Shah police said the truck was in their custody.

KILLED: A mentally challenged woman killed her brother in village 88/12-L late on Sunday.

Family sources reported that Jamila woke up late at night, picked up a hoe, and killed her brother Muhammad Rafiq while he was asleep next to her in the courtyard.

The Okanwala police rushed to the scene and found the woman sitting in the courtyard with the weapon.

The family declined to take any police action.

VC: Dr Javed Akhter, University of Sahiwal vice-chancellor (VC), has been given additional charge as the University of Kamalia VC for six months.

On the direction of Governor Balighur Rehman, the Higher Education Department issued a notification in this regard.
