Cycle rally held to raise awareness on smog

LAHORE: The divisional administration on Sunday organised a cycle rally in Gulberg in collaboration with the private sector, the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) and Critical Mass Cycling Club.

The event was held to raise awareness on smog, to promote a healthy environment and to encourage positive civic activities.

The event track started from Liberty Chowk and ended at the same point after passing through Main Boulevard Gulberg and Zahoor Elahi Road. Led by Commissioner Muhammad Ali Randhawa, a number of people from cycling groups, media houses, LDA, district administration, police, PHA, LWMC, and Rescue 1122 besides families and children completed the track.

Before the start of the event, the commissioner urged the citizens to bring their bicycles and participate in the event to show commitment to a healthy environment.

“The purpose of the cycling event is to raise awareness about environmental pollution in the city. Lahore is our home and its citizens should come forward to promote a healthy environment,” he said while addressing the participants at the end of the rally.

He added that a green line had been designated for bicyclists from the Liberty Roundabout to Zahoor Elahi Road. Cycling events will be included in the city’s annual calendar, creating a continuous series of cycling events.

“Instructions have been issued to set up green lanes for cycling. Under the anti-smog campaign, 135 intersections in the city are being expanded to reduce traffic congestion,” Mr Randhawa declared.
