Rainfall after eight weeks revives withering crops in Thar

MITHI: Tharparkar received much-needed rainfall on Monday, providing relief to local farming community who had sown crops after heavy rains in July and were waiting for the second spell of rain for their crops for nearly eight weeks.

Thari farmers had sown crops in late July following heavy downpours in Nagarparkar, Chhachhro, Dahli, Diplo, Kaloi, Mithi and Islamkot talukas of the district but lack of rainfall throughout August and over half of September had threatened the crops.

Tharparkar needs six to eight spells of rainfall during three-month monsoon season, with intervals of about 15 to 18 days to help proper growth of the crop and produce fodder for livestock, which is crucial to local economy.
