Special courts demanded for power thieves

LAHORE: Electricity workers have appreciated the federal and provincial governments for provision of security to employees of the power distribution companies (Discos) in their operations against electricity theft.

In a meeting held at Bakhtiar Labour Hall on Wednesday, under the auspices of the All Pakistan Wapda Hydro Electric Workers Union, the workers appealed to the prime minister to get implemented the decision of establishing special courts and police stations for power theft cases.

They also urged the premier to introduce a special law to prevent power theft and provide security to the Discos field staff.

Through a resolution, the government was urged to take measures to prevent tragic accidents causing the death of line staff during the performance of their duties.

More than 80 workers have met with tragic fatal and non-fatal accidents during this year.

The government was also urged to revise high rates of independent power producers (IPPs) to provide cheap electricity to the consumers, besides checking price hike of essential commodities.

The meeting was addressed by union secretary general Khurshid Ahmad and other union leaders.
