KARACHI: The Sindh High Court has directed the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation to file comments on a petition seeking maintenance of a broken water pipeline passing through Malir River.

When a two-judge bench headed by Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi took up the matter for hearing, the lawyer for the KWSC sought further time to file comments.

Adjourning the hearing till Oct 13, the bench directed the counsel to make sure that the reply was filed before the next date of hearing.

Petitioner Zamrud Khan Awan cited the secretary of local government department and the KWSC as respondents.

He submitted that a 33-inch water pipeline passing through the Malir River between Korangi Crossing and Qayyumabad had been partly damaged and leaked out at several points.

He said that sewage as well as industrial toxic materials were flowing along the pipeline and polluting it.

Subsequently, he stated that the water being supplied through the pipeline had become contaminated, causing multiple diseases to people of several areas.

The petitioner also submitted that the respondents had been approached time and again to repair and maintain the pipeline and also ensure proper supply of potable water to residents of Qayyumabad, Akhtar Colony, Kashmir Colony and other adjourning areas, but no action was taken in this regard.
