Economist Pervez Tahir passes away

LAHORE: Qul Khwani for the departed soul of renowned economist Pervez Tahir will be held at his residence in Islamabad on Sunday (today).

He had passed away at a Lahore’s Hospital on Friday morning and was laid to rest in Miani Sahib Graveyard in the evening. Mr Tahir died of a cardiac arrest. He left behind a widow, a son and a daughter.

His Qul Khwani will be held at his house B-2 F-8 sector, Islamabad, on Sunday (today).

Dr Tahir was currently serving as a senior visiting fellow at the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics in Islamabad.

He remained the chairman of the Bank of Punjab, chief economist of the Planning Commission, and managing director of the National Energy Conservation Centre.

He held Mahbubul Haq Chair at GCU, Lahore, and was Professor of Economics at FCC University in 2007-09. From 2003 to 2006, Dr Tahir served on the statistical advisory panel of UNDP’s global human development report.

He was also a regular columnist for the Express Tribune and authored and edited three books, the latest just brought out by Palgrave Macmillan of London and New York. His publications have appeared in numerous journals at home and abroad.

He had widely traveled and was a well-known speaker at the international and national conference circuits and media.

Dr Tahir had completed a PhD in economics from the University of Cambridge and Master’s from the University of Colorado at Boulder. In 1990, he held the Joan Robinson Memorial Lectureship at Cambridge.
