LIVE PROCEEDINGS
LIVE PROCEEDINGS: The live telecast of Supreme Court proceedings has been rightly applauded by many. It will play a significant role in promoting the status and stature of our judiciary. The legal fraternity, including budding lawyers, will learn so many things from such telecast. It will win the confidence of the people when they see dignity, transparency and justice live. However, the country is facing an institutional imbalance compounded by political polarisation. Sensitive cases in such an environment will surely test the patience, wisdom and courage of the judiciary.

APATHY: The is with reference to the photo (Metro, Sept 15) showing a portion of overhead main water pipeline on Korangi Road that has been leaking for the last several months. A similar image had appeared a while ago. In the previous photo, the leakage was much less and there were no trees growing around it. The latest photo shows the leak has become a waterfall, and a tree has grown up on there. The size of the tree is an indicator of how long the pipeline has been leaking. The residents of the downstream areas are suffering from a severe water shortage, while thousands of gallons of water are being wasted daily due to the negligence of those responsible for its repair. If this is not apathy, what is?

INDIA TO BHARAT: Changing India’s name to ‘Bharat’ is a move to prioritise specific culture and religious identity, potentially excluding and alienating minority communities that do not identify with such heritage. Furthermore, renaming a country is a political move in order to polarise the population and divert their attention from pressing issues, such as communal riots, economic woes, etc. And then, of course, there are elections coming up. If India is really a secular country, the government must prove it practically. Restoring occupied Kashmir’s special status will be a serious step in this regard.
