Iesco imposes Rs5 million fine on power pilferers

ISLAMABAD: Islamabad Electric Supply Company (Iesco) has charged 108,476 units of electricity with fines of more than Rs5 million imposed on electricity pilferers.

Police have also registered FIRs against them and apprehended two pilferers.

According to a statement, the Iesco on Tuesday carried out operation against electricity theft across all its operational Circles, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi City, Rawalpindi Cantt, Attock, Jhelum and Chakwal.

Iesco spokesperson said that on 34th day of the operation, teams inspected a total of 4,846 electricity meters and found more than 42 meters tampered with. It charged 108,476 units of electricity, with imposing a fine of more than Rs 5 million.

“During the ongoing campaign to combat electricity theft, Iesco detection teams have checked a cumulative total of 107,033 meters and found electricity was being stolen from 1,767 meters and imposed Rs118.8 million fine on those responsible for illegal electricity consumption by charging 2.57 million units. Additionally, the electricity connections of individuals found using electricity directly or tampering with meters were also disconnected.

Police have registered 399 FIRs and arrested 307 individuals for electricity theft. Consumers are requested to report electricity theft by contacting the helpline at 118 or the Complaint and Monitoring Cell at 0519252933,” he said.
