Inflation and education

RECENTLY, fans, water motors, solar panels and other stuff related to a couple of primary schools in Johi tehsil were stolen. On the other hand, despite the appointment of new teachers, several schools in the area still remain non-functional. Together, the two facts indicate the dismal state of education in the country.

The teachers are often found working in non-profit organisations or private firms, or even running their own businesses. Even school watchmen are seen busy doing some ‘parallel’ work, enjoying two income streams. The officials are allegedly taking bribes from absent teachers, and encouraging punctual teachers to join the bandwagon. Everybody cites ‘the rising inflation’ to rationalise their own misplaced sense of responsibility.

At the higher level of governance, no action is taken because most culprits at the lower tiers are either politically well-connected, or the share of the booty also goes right up the hierarchy.

The relevant authorities should take due action due against all the corrupt elements that are involved in this multi-lyered tale of misery and malpractice.
