JCP approves Justice Irfan’s elevation to apex court

ISLAMABAD: The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) in its meeting on Friday unanimously approved the nomination of Justice Irfan Saadat Khan, acting chief justice of the Sindh High Court, for his elevation to the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

At the JCP meeting, Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa observed that Justice Khan meets the stipulated requirement since he was knowledgeable, well experienced, versatile, has an upright character and was also the most senior judge amongst the chief justices and judges of all the high courts.

All members present at the meeting approved the nomination, which was also endorsed in writing by the law minister who has been abroad.

The nomination of Justice Khan will be sent to a parliamentary committee under Article 175A(8) and (12) of the Constitution.

The other item on the agenda of the JCP meeting was to determine the criteria for appointment of high court judges.

As the CJP had written to members of all the commissions asking them for their views on the matter, the suggestions were shared with the JCP members who then sought time to consider the same.

It was also decided to extend the deadline for submission of suggestions till Oct 27. The same will be considered at the next JCP meeting.
