Babar bows out of world snooker
DOHA: Babar Masih, Pakistan’s last hope in the individual event of the IBSF Men’s World Snooker Championship, lost to Micheal Georgiou of Cyprus 5-2 in the quarter-final here on Thursday.
Georgiou drew the first blood with the break of 79 and doubled his advantage with a 80-04 win in the next. Babar halved the deficit in the third game 67-02 but the Cypriot regained the advantage as he won 64-09 in the following frame.
Babar again struck back with a hard-fought victory in the fifth frame 54-48 but Georgiou came out on top to go 4-2 up with a 70-09 win before wrapping up the triumph in the next frame 91-48.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s duo of Mohammad Naseem and Ahsan Ramzan defeated Germany 3-1 in the team event.
The pair lost the first frame 74-09 but roared back to win three consecutive frames 69-05, 54-37, 68-60 to register their first win of the tournament. They now face cueists from the UAE on Friday.
