13 sheep, cow killed by bus

BAHAWALPUR: A herd of 13 sheep and a cow were struck and killed by a coach near Israni Adda on Hasilpur-Bahawalpur Road, 40km from here, on Monday.

According to reports from the police and Rescue 1122, the bus collided with the herd of sheep, which had abruptly attempted to cross the road.

The bus also had a collision with a tractor-trolley during the incident. Asif, identified as an employee of the patrolling police, sustained injuries. After receiving initial first aid from rescuers, he was shifted to Bahawal Victoria Hospital.

The police visited the scene to initiate legal proceedings.

DROWNS: A man drowned while fishing in the river Sutlej while his brother was rescued.

According to officials of the Rescue 1122, Mumtaz Ahmed (45) and his brother Muhammad Gulzar were fishing in the river near Mochianwala Pattan on Jhangiwali Road on Sunday.

Mumtaz moved into deep water and drowned while Gulzar was saved by the locals.

He was shifted to Bahawal Victoria Hospital (BVH) for treatment. Mumtaz’s body could not be traced till the evening when the search was abandoned due to darkness.

CONFERENCE: The Islamia University’s Department of Plant Pathology, Faculty of Agriculture and Environment, in collaboration with the Pakistan Phytopathological Society and Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research, organised the 8th international conference on “Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security” at Baghdadul Jadeed Campus.

IUB Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Naveed Akhtar inaugurated the conference.

The focal person of the conference, Prof Dr Naveed Aslam Malghani, said 530 scientists, researchers and experts from America, China, Turkey, Italy, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan were registered for the conference.

The participants addressed with special relevance to plant pathogens, climate change and water challenges.
