Poll contender survives gun attack in Swabi

SWABI: Election candidate Irfan Jadoon survived a gun attack here on Tuesday.

Armed men targeted Mr Jadoon, a candidate in PK-49 constituency, in his Gandaf village on return from a funeral procession, according to Topi tehsil DSP Mohammed Shafiq.

He told Dawn that the incident took place in the jurisdiction of the Gadoon Amazai Industrial Estate Police Station. The DSP said the police cordoned off the area after the attack and began a search operation.

Mr Jadoon is one of the founding members of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf in Swabi district.

He told police that a man fired two gunshots at his car when he was going home after attending a resident’s funeral prayers in Topi village.

The candidate said the bullets left visible marks on a car door.

Mr Jadoon, who enjoyed the support of the local Khangi Jirga and resented election nominations by PTI leaders, claimed that he was supported by a majority of workers.

KILLED: A man was stabbed to death in Baja village here on Monday. The body was shifted to the Bacha Khan Teaching Hospitalfor postmortem.

Resident Gul Akbar told police that he was outside when he learned last morning about the murder of his son, Arif, inside the house in Qasimkhel area. He added that on reaching home, he found his son dead.

The resident later named his relative, Muneeb Khan, as a killer claiming that his son was stabbed with a dagger.

He, however, didn’t reveal the possible reason for the murder.

BURGLED: A house was burgled in Manki village in Chota Lahor tehsil here on Monday night.

All family members were away when the incident took place.

The house is inhabited by two brothers and cattle traders, Mohammed Ali and Ismail Khan, and their families.

They said burglars took away cash and valuables.

The residents complained about an increase in the number of robberies and burglaries in the area.

They said two houses were burgled in the Bazarcham area a few days ago.

The police said they were investigating the incident.
