The Special Court that sentenced former premier Imran Khan and ex-foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi to 10 years in jail in the cipher case has said that both politicians “applied very malignant practice just to protract these proceedings”.

In its detailed judgment, Judge Abual Hasnat Zulqarnain stated that the court “provided all legal measures” to guarantee both leaders their legal right of defence for cross-examination but by “the act of both accused not to cross-examine the PWs (prosecution witnesses), they took absolutely light [of it]”.

“In my humbly [sic] view, these two accused Imran Ahmad Khan Niazi and Shah Mehmood Qureshi does [sic] not deserve any leniency due to their deliberate and advertent act in order to avoid cross-examination on thePWs,” the judge wrote.

The “revelation and manipulation of secret, sensitive and classified information” to “achieve their personal and political interests, at the altar of national stability and national security, patently constitute grave violations of the laws of Pakistan,” he said.
