ATC denies physical remand of ex-MNA in another case

LAHORE: An anti-terrorism court on Thursday denied physical remand of former MNA Aalia Hamza to the police in a May 9 case of attacking Shadman police station and sent her to jail on judicial remand.

The police arrested the jailed leader of the PTI in the case after the Lahore High Court granted her bail in the Jinnah House attack.

The police presented Ms Hamza before the court to seek her physical remand for 14 days in the new case.

Advocate Parvez Iqbal appeared on behalf of the suspect and argued that the police acted with malafide to implicate his client in a new case. He said the suspect was in jail for the last nine months.

The counsel said the police arrested the PTI leader in a new case only to frustrate her release following the grant of bail. He asked the court to reject the police request and discharge the former MNA in the case.

Judge Naveed Iqbal denied the physical remand of Ms Hamza to the police, sending her to jail on judicial remand. He directed the police to produce the suspect again on Feb 14.

Separately, the judge extended the physical remand of Khalid Mahmood Gujjar, a PTI candidate from a provincial seat in Lahore, for further 11 days in Askari Tower attack case.

Gulberg police presented Gujjar before the court on expiry of his seven-day remand.

The investigating officer told the court that further custody of the suspect was required to recover his mobile phone and conduct of photogrammetric test. The IO sought a 30-day physical remand of the suspect.

However, the judge extended the remand for 11 days.
