US alerts Americans ahead of elections in Pakistan
WASHINGTON: A US security alert on Saturday urged American citizens in Pakistan to stay vigilant during the upcoming general elections, scheduled for February 8.
The notice also highlights potential disruptions and safety concerns related to political activities, such as marches, rallies, and speeches leading up to election day.
US citizens planning to visit Pakistan are urged to stay informed about the locations of political rallies in their planned areas.
The notice warns that specific areas around polling stations on election day are expected to be crowded, prompting non-participating US citizens to avoid these locations.
It points out that disruptions to internet and cellular services are anticipated in the period leading up to, during, and immediately after the elections.
The security alert urges US citizens in Pakistan to contact the US Embassy in Islamabad and the US Consulate Generals in Karachi, Lahore, and Peshawar, and State Department’s Consular Affairs in Washington, if they need assistance.
The alert encourages enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Programme for security updates, with additional information available on the US Embassy’s official website.
As Pakistan’s political landscape evolves ahead of the general elections, the US State Department reaffirms its commitment to offering timely information and support to American citizens in the region, urging them to stay informed and take necessary precautions for their safety amid heightened political activity.
At a recent news briefing, State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller emphasised that violence during political activities undermines the electoral process.
Another State Department official told Dawn that the United States wants to see the electoral process in Pakistan “unfold in a way that allows broad participation for all parties and respects democratic principles.”
The official clarified that Washington does not favor or oppose any candidate, stating, “We don’t take a position aside from supporting the Pakistani people’s right to choose their government.”
The official added that “the Pakistani people have the right to choose their leader without fear for the country’s stability and prosperity.”
