KU Senate meets after five years to approve budgets

KARACHI: The meeting of the Senate of the University of Karachi was held on Wednesday after a gap of around five years and approved the annual actual statements of accounts for as many financial years.

It was the 21st meeting of the Senate as the last meeting was held on March 26, 2019.

Members of the KU Senate “unanimously approved” the annual statements filed by KU Director of Finance Tariq Kaleem for FY 2018, FY 2019, FY 20220, FY 2021 and FY 2022 as well as the revised budget for these years, said a press release issued here.

The meeting was held at the Arts Auditorium and it was presided over by KU Vice Chancellor Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi.

The Senate formed a four-member committee to recommend the model statutes for the centres and institutes of the University of Karachi.

The committee would be headed by Prof Dr Faiyaz Vaid and comprising Prof Dr Haris Shoaib, Prof Dr Noreen Mujahid and retired Justice Hasan Feroz.

Meanwhile, Prof Dr Solaha Rehman was elected a member of the Senate’s finance and planning committee for three years. She secured 59 votes against Prof Dr Rohi Ahmed who got 56 votes in the election held for this position.

The meeting also confirmed the proceedings of the 20th Senate meeting.

Speaking on the occasion, the KU VC claimed that despite financial difficulties, the KU’s ranking had increased and so the numbers of reputable research journals.

He stated that universities were recognised by the standards of their research and teaching activities. With the rapid increase in the rate of inflation the frequent increase in salaries by the government and the lack of funds all universities are facing financial issues, he added.
