Story time: The unfulfilled promise

It was a dazzling, magical day when I woke with the sun’s golden light reflecting on my cosy, comfy bed, reminding me that it was my birthday. I was excited about my upcoming promised surprise.

Ecstatic with excitement, I headed to enjoy my cup of cold coffee with delight. It was midday and soon I noticed the yellow warmth of the sun dimming, and the dark, jade rain clouds were assembling to rain on my special day, and that raised concerns about their promise’s fulfilment.

And then it started to rain. My parents, with apologetic smiles, informed me that the rain had changed their plans. Gloomy and depressed, I went to my room, slammed the door and started sobbing. I had a mix of dismay and sorrow and was quivering on my bed.

After a while, my mum came in, sat beside me and made me understand the situation. My anger settled as I grasped the situation, however, when I went down, there was a huge surprise.

Suddenly my mum placed a birthday cap on my head and everyone started singing, “Happy Birthday”.

My home transformed into a hub of laughter and bonding, creating new cherished moments. The unfulfilled promise began to lose its grip as the family reunion took centre-stage. All my concerns and complaints vanished and I was on cloud nine!

“I-I am s-sorry for my actions,” I babbled with regret, but my dad hugged me.

As the day ended, I snuggled into bed with a smile on my face. The original promise of an outdoor party had faltered due to rain, but then the love and effort of my parents shone through. I realised that their dedication had turned a potentially disappointing day into a celebration of family warmth.

Sometimes things don’t go as planned, but that’s okay. The thing that matters is the love and unity we share with our family. Even when promises can’t be kept, the care and effort of our loved ones can make us happy.
