ASWJ activist shot dead in Korangi ‘targeted attack’

KARACHI: A local leader of the outlawed Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) was shot dead in a suspected targeted attack in Korangi on Saturday evening, police and his party said.

Korangi Industrial Area police SHO Aurangzeb Khattak said that Fayaz Khan, 37, was present in his office in Mehran Town in Sector-F-6 when armed motorcyclists emerged there and one of them asked about some address. Later, the assailants entered his office, opened straight fire and fled.

The man suffered bullet wounds in the chest and died on the spot. Later, the body was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for a post-mortem examination.

The victim was father of four children and he was associated with property business.

The area SHO said that it appeared to be a targeted killing incident as the assailants did not take away anything.

A spokesperson for the ASWJ told Dawn that the victim was the vice president of the party’s local chapter in district Korangi. He said Fayaz Khan was the third ASWJ member targeted in the same Korangi area during a short span of three months.

He said that the provincial government and law enforcement agencies had failed to curb targeted killings and bring the culprits to justice.

Later, the ASWJ, in a statement, blamed ‘foreign agents’ for the killing of their workers and demanded that the Sindh government provide security to their leaders.

Meanwhile, Karachi police chief Imran Yaqoob Minhas took notice of the killing and directed the DIG-East to submit a detailed inquiry report and ensure immediate arrest of the killers.

Teenager stabbed to death

A teenager was killed in Baldia Town late on Friday night, police said.

They said that Rehmatullah, 18, was stabbed to death by suspect Luqman Aziz over some personal dispute in Abidabad’s Subhani Mohalla.

Ittehad Town SHO Zafar Ali Shah said that Luqman was returning home when he saw Rehmatullah and attacked him. The wounded teenager was taken to a hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.

He said that the police arrested the suspect.
