Miscreants blow up girl’s academy in Waziristan

SOUTH WAZIRISTAN: Unidentified miscreants blew up an under-construction girls’ academy in Lower South Waziristan tribal district in the wee hours on Friday, the police said.

Police officials said the incident took place at 3:15am, adding a room and boundary wall of the under-construction building were damaged. However, they added no casualties were reported. They said the incident was being probed.

Jalal Wazir, general secretary of Wana Welfare Association, said work on the girls’ academy was inaugurated on March 20. He said his organisation had donated Rs40 million for construction of the academy.

Wazir said 25 per cent work on the academy’s building had been completed. He claimed unknown miscreants planted explosives inside the building, which went off with a bang.

It may be recalled that a few days ago unknown persons had also filled the well of the academy with stones at night.

Meanwhile, the police recovered weapons and ammunition and arrested two arms dealers during a raid in Azam Warsak area of the Birmal tehsil the other day.

The seizure included 17 pistols, 11 binoculars, a revolver, 86 SMG flush folders, 15 detonators, hundreds of rounds and magazines.
