Senior Pashto poet gets lifetime achievement award

PESHAWAR: Noted progressive poet and writer Rahmat Shah Sail was decorated with lifetime achievement award and cash prize at a ceremony here on Sunday in recognition of his contribution to Pashto language and literature.

The event was arranged under the auspices of Pakistan Writers Guild wherein a large number of literati and fans of the poet showed up. Over a dozen of his poetry collections have been received awards and appreciation from literary bodies and rights activists.

The literary career of the veteran writer spanned over five decades during which his work both poetry and prose acclaimed widespread reputation for his moving style and unique expression. He has represented Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in Gulf States, the US and UK and has large fans following in Afghanistan, Balochistan and wherever Pashto is being spoken and understood.

Speakers say Rahmat Shah Sail influenced three generations of poets

Recipient of President’s Pride of Performance and numerous awards and commendation certificate, Mr Sail has brought out over 30 books while his several other publications are ready for print. The prolific poet has also suffered imprisonments on several occasions due to his radical thoughts.

Amjad Ali Khadim, the moderator of the event, said Rahmat Shah Sail was a poet of substance and a strong voice for people, therefore he enjoyed a high status among literary circles of all shades and critiques among youth.

Prof Aseer Mangal, the provincial secretary of Pakistan Writers Guild (PWG) in his opening remarks pointed out that literary contributions of Rahmat Shah Sail were not only immense but also inspirational as his works influenced almost three generations of poets through his poetic thoughts and an enlightened vision.

“His poetry is deeply drenched in romance, humanism, love of land and people. He has always advocated peace and progressive thoughts in his writings. He has tutored young literati in a large number to use their talent for educating people,” he said.

Mr Mangal said that several contemporary progressive poets including Ajmal Khattak, Shamaul Qamar Andesh and Murad Shinwari couldn’t eclipse the poetic stature of Rahmat Shah Sail.

Sher Wali Orakzai and Abid Jan on the occasion presented their poetic tribute to the guest poet and termed him a true spirit of the age. They said that Rahmat Shah Sail introduced new trends in Pashto poetry, fiction and research and youth should hold him in high esteem for his selfless services for Pashto and Pashtuns at large.
