Digital inclusivity

THE National Human Development Report 2023-24 for Pakistan, titled ‘Doing Digital for Development’, released by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) recently, has revealed disparities within Pakistan’s digital landscape. While urban centres like Islamabad shine with ‘very high’ digital development, vast areas of the country linger in the shadows of low digital development rankings. This disparity underscores the urgent need for compre-hensive policies to bridge the digital divide, and ensure equitable access to digital opportunities for all.

Also, the report has highlighted that 83.5 per cent of women report limited autonomy over phone ownership, exposing deep-rooted gender disparities in the digital ecosystem of Pakistan. It is clear that the country needs a comprehensive scheme for digital development.

At the forefront of this agenda should be the imperative to expand mobile network coverage, ensuring stable internet connections even in the remotest corners of the country. Facilitating access to mobile phones is also crucial, especially for marginalised segments and communities. However, access alone is not sufficient. Awareness sessions on digital literacy can equip individuals with the skills and knowledge they need to leverage digital technologies for personal as well as professional growth.

Digitalising markets and promoting widespread adoption of digital payments represent crucial steps towards inclusivity. By transitioning from cash-based transactions to digital payments, Pakistan can foster greater efficiency, transparency and financial inclusion.

Furthermore, implementing skill development schemes for the uneducated population is essential to ensure that no one is left behind in the digital age.

Social media platforms offer ample opportunities for individuals to generate income through content creation even without formal education. People need to have access to, and understanding of, such opportunities without discrimination.
