Urea to be imported for uninterrupted supply, says minister
ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Industries, Production and National Food Security Rana Tanveer Hussain on Thursday said the government is taking steps to ensure uninterrupted supply of fertilisers to farmers and for this purpose it will import about 200,000 tonnes of urea.
Stringent monitoring will be done of dealers and distributors involved in black marketing and a uniform rate of urea across the country will be ensured, said the minister while presiding over a meeting.
The meeting reviewed measures taken to ensure fertiliser supply chain and uniform prices across the country.
Mr Tanveer emphasised the importance of ensuring urea supply during the upcoming sowing season and said 200,000 tonnes of urea is being imported to meet the target.
“The government is committed to stopping fertiliser smuggling and ensuring equal distribution of urea at affordable prices,” he said.
The minister emphasised that the protection of farmers’ interests is the top priority of the government and asked all fertiliser companies and dealers to supply urea at the same rates.
He said a comprehensive strategy has been prepared to control urea black marketing.
Mr Tanveer urged the provinces to actively participate in implementing the federal government’s actions and monitor fertiliser distributors and dealers closely.
“Strict measures will be taken against those involved in black marketing to ensure transparency,” the minister said.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to stop exploitation of farmers by the fertiliser mafia and pledged not to tolerate any negligence in providing fertiliser to farmers.
He said intelligence agencies will be engaged to bring transparency and merit into the system and accountability of those involved in illegal practices will be ensured.
“Farmers’ interests will be protected and their needs of fertiliser will be met without any delay or compromise,” the minister said.
