A myopic approach

THIS is with reference to the report “Over 11,250 non-filers’ SIMs blocked so far” (May 24). The government’s decision to block SIM cards of non-filers aims at tightening the grip on tax compliance, but it reflects a rather myopic approach that fails to acknowledge the interconnectedness of various sectors within the economy.

Telecommunication companies (telcos), the primary targets of the directive, are not the sole entities affected by such a move. Indeed, the repercussions extend far beyond the telecom sector, ensnaring industries ranging from fintechs and banks to technology firms and social media platforms.

The failure to engage stakeholders beyond telecom operators underscores a systemic flaw in the decision-making process. By neglecting to consult the relevant stakeholders, policymakers have inadvertently overlooked the intricate web of dependencies woven into the digital landscape. The decision to block SIM cards of non-filers epitomises the familiar imprudence that prevails in the corridors of power.

It is a stark reminder of the urgent need for holistic policymaking that takes into account the multifaceted nature of the national economy. Until then, we risk perpetuating a cycle of short-sighted decisions that undermine, not bolster, the foundations of our socioeconomic landscape. With everything related to policymaking, it feels like whenever Pakistan takes a step forward, some institution or the other will come in and force us to take four steps back. This is a vicious cycle.
