LIFESTYLE ADJUSTMENT

LIFESTYLE ADJUSTMENT: A recent advertisement by the Sindh Health Department (June 1) presented some good precautionary measures to avoid heat-related illnesses. The sun emits different kinds of ultraviolet (UV) rays, including A, B and C, which are extremely harmful. Although UVB and UVC can cause sunburn and skin damage, while UVA causes significant damage via indirect routes owing to the formation of free radicals that can cause oxidation of body tissues and cancer. These rays also cause wrinkles on face and premature ageing. Some effects can be overcome by eating fresh fruits. People should carry an umbrella, preferably of blue colour, with them when they go out of their homes. Besides, children should be kept indoors between 10am and 5pm.

POOR SECURITY: Kharan city has been facing an alarming surge in incidents of motorcycle theft, especially after sunset. There is widespread fear among the local residents, and there is an urgent need to initiate effective intervention by the law-enforcement agencies by way of increasing police patrols, and fostering community vigilance to re-establish peace and safety in the area. Additionally, implementing public awareness campaigns and encouraging neighbourhood watch programmes can play a pivotal role in controlling criminal activities.

EDUCATION FOR ALL: The abrupt cancellation of pre-medical and pre-engi- neering classes at Government Boys Degree College in Jacobabad has left students in a state of disillusionment. The classes were only held for a week, and then the notification was suddenly withdrawn by the college. The relevant authorities should take immediate action against this injustice, ensuring that such incidents do not recur and disrupt the education of the deserving students. We must ensure that our educational system remains equitable and accessible to all, regardless of one’s social background.
