THIS is with reference to the letter ‘The role of mosques’ (May 31). During my days in Karachi, I also observed that almost all mosques in Pakistan are only used for the conduct of prayers. Being a resident of Canada, I have seen as well as observed the role played by mosques across North America in the daily life of Muslim communities, acting as schools and community centres as well.

Similarly, some mosques regularly conduct classes for learning Arabic language, Islamic history, and religious teachings. Besides, in almost every mosque, there is a separate section for women, encouraging them to say their prayer in the mosques. Some mosques also transmit the Friday Sermon online which are then uploaded on YouTube.

Mosques in Pakistan should think about taking up such essential functions. In essence, it will educate the masses in much more meaningful and effective ways.
