Hamza, Sohail clinch titles at Asian Jr Squash

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan players Hamza Khan and Sohail Adnan won the U-19 and U-13 titles respectively in the 31st Asian Junior Championship that concluded here at the Mushaf Squash Complex on Saturday.

In the final, Hamza defeated Malaysia’s Harith Danial 11-5, 12-10, 11-9 while Sohail in a tough decider overcame compatriot Huzaifa Shahid 12-10, 12-10, 5-11, 4-11, 11-8.

India’s Shiven Agarwal defeated Mohammad Raziq Puttra of Malaysia in the U-15 final 11-7, 8-11, 11-5, 13-11. The U-17 title was claimed by Malaysia’s Nikhelswar who defeated Pakistan’s Abdullah Nawaz 9-11, 9-11, 12-10, 11-8, 11-6.

In the girls section, India’s Aadya Budhia beat compatriot Goushika 11-5, 11-5, 11-4 to clinch the U-13 title.

Harleein Tan of Malaysia beat Hong Kong’s Lo Pui Yin Chloe 11-8, 11-4, 11-6 to seize the U-15 girls final.

The U-17 girls title went to Hong Kong’s Enna Kwong who defeated compatriot Tang Helen 6-11, 11-6, 11-9, 11-1.

Meanwhile, Thanussa Uthrian of Malaysia outclassed Japan’s Akari Midorikawa 11-8, 11-7, 11-2 in the U-19 decider.

Around 200 male and female players from several Asian countries including Hong Kong-China, India, Iran, Japan, Korea, Macau-China, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, Qatar, Singapore and Sri Lanka participated in the championship.

In addition to the main draw, medals were also awarded to the players for Consolation Plate.

Results of Plate Event (finals):

U-13 girls: Jacintha Han (Singapore) bt Nurul Nageena (Malaysia) 11-3, 11-6, 11-13, 11-2. Jacintha won Gold and Nurul Nageena got Silver.

U-15 girls: Wong Suit Ling (Hong Kong) bt Chang Ka Yu (Hong Kong) 12-10, 3-11, 7-11, 11-3, 11-9.

U-17 girls: Mehwish Ali (Pakistan) bt Saiesha Ranjan (Singapore) 11-7, 11-9, 11-7.

U-19 girls: Shamina Riaz (India) bt Nargol Raminzadeh (Iran) 11-8, 11-6, 11-6.

U-13 boys: Vidhurran Ruthiran (Malaysia) bt Wong Ho Kiu (Hong Kong) 11-5, 5-11, 11-7, 14-12.

U-15 boys: Ahmed Khalil (Pakistan) bt Ong Zhi (Singapore) 11-5, 11-3, 11-6.

U-17 boys: Obaid Ullah (Pakistan) bt Junho Kim (Korea) 11-9, 11-9, 14-12.

U-19 Boys: Lo Wa Sern (Malaysia) bt Veroon Heng (Malaysia) 11-4, 11-3, 11-5.
