Celebratory firing at Karachi wedding claims girl’s life, groom held
KARACHI: Celebratory gunfire at a wedding ceremony in celebration claimed the life of a teenage girl in the SITE area late Saturday night, police said on Sunday.
The bridegroom and his father were arrested after the incident.
SITE-A police station SHO Farooq Sanjrani said that Khadija Husain, 17, was shot dead in the firing in Metroville near a girls’ college.
He said the victim was on a bus with other guests when celebratory gunfire rang out and a stray bullet hit and killed the girl.
The police rushed to the spot, detained bridegroom Noor Zaman, his father and impounded the bus.
The officer said the girl’s relatives appeared reluctant to pursue the case, but the police have decided to register a case against the groom on behalf of the state.
The body was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities.
Young shopkeeper gunned down
A young shopkeeper was shot dead in Korangi-6 on Sunday evening, police said.
Awami Colony police SHO Nasir Mehmood said that Waseem Wahab, 25, was sitting inside his shop when two armed motorcyclists arrived there.
One of them got off the bike and allegedly opened fire on him before fleeing.
The victim suffered critical bullet injuries and was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
The police officer claimed that the firing was carried out from a distance of around 10 feet and ruled out the possibility of any robbery attempt.
He expressed his opinion that the murder might be motivated by personal enmity.
Investigators have collected four spent bullet casings fired from a 9mm pistol from the crime scene.
