Health official shot dead in Bajaur

BAJAUR: Gunmen killed a health official near Gat Agra area of Mamund tehsil here on Sunday evening.

No one claimed responsibility for the killing until Monday evening.

Residents and police officials told Dawn that Abdur Rashid was on the way to home in the hilly Gat Agra locality when unidentified men attacked him with rifles in Sarakai Joohar area, killing him immediately.

They said that the deceased, 54, was a senior operating theatre assistant at the district headquarters hospital in Khar.

Israr Khan, a spokesman for the local police, told Dawn that a team of policemen deployed in the area rushed to the area after learning about the gun attack and found Mr Rashid dead.

He said that the police found no blood in the area indicating that the health official was likely killed elsewhere before being transported and left in Sarakai Joohar.

The official said that the police had begun an investigation into the killing to trace culprits.

He, however, said the search for killers had yet not made any headway.

Mr Khan said the deceased’s family had neither named anyone for the killing nor had it approached the police to book anyone for the crime.

He said the police would register FIR against unidentified gunmen if the deceased’s family didn’t submit an application for it in the relevant police station by Tuesday (today).

An official of the Mamund police station told Dawn that the residents claimed that the deceased and his family had no enmity.

Meanwhile, workers of a local health organisation and district headquarters hospital condemned the killing and demanded authorities ensure early arrest of the attackers for strict punishment.

They made the demand after attending the funeral prayer of Abdur Rehman in his native area on Monday morning.
