From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1974: Fifty Years Ago: ‘Exercise restraint’

LAHORE: Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto today [July 6] advised the Press of the country to exercise restraint and refrain from adding journalistic fuel to emotional fires. In a message on the occasion of the fourth anniversary of daily Mussawat Lahore, the Premier said that in such an incendiary climate of opinion when segments of our society persisted in preaching violence and intolerance towards our compatriots, it was imperative for a journalist to exercise restraint, and avoid bigotry, airing of prejudices and emotional rabble-rousing. … “The role of journalism in the present times … has become highly sensitive,” [he said].

[Meanwhile, as reported by news agencies from Islamabad,] the Special Committee of the National Assembly met here... . … Before taking up the items on the agenda, the Committee offered Fateha for Al-Haj Syed Mohammad Amin Al-Husseini. … The request of the Nazir-e-Ala Sadar, Anjuman Ahmadia, Rabwah, and the General Secretary, Anjuman-i-Ishaat-i-Islam, Lahore, to present their viewpoints in writing and produce documents etc. before the Special Committee was accepted. … The heads of the respective Jamaats would be heard by the Special Committee.
